Japanese artists Norio and Chifumi Ishiwata are Orinotawashi … “caged eagle”. Far from being caged, this couple works with a freedom and playfulness in their collaboration in art that would make most marriages jealous. After 10 years of marriage they had promised themselves a year of art residencies around the globe. They applied to 20 art residencies and were accepted to 5 … in Egypt, Zambia, Italy, Barcelona, Spain and Tetouan, Morocco.
With a goal of exploring culture and literally living off their art, they went to each of these places and dove into cultures vastly different from their own. Exchanging paintings for groceries, sculpture lessons, big family feasts, hiking trips, and other art, they lived out their anniversary dream and had a lot of fun in the process.
After their time at Green Olive Arts, they asked to speak to Japanese artists about their art residency here in Tetouan …
We’ll post their comments in English sometime soon too. 😉
Feel free to share with your Japanese artist friends!
