Create in Morocco! New Art Residency Invites the World’s Artists to Tetouan, Morocco
Tetouan — Exotic Morocco has long been a favorite destination and inspiration for countless literary, visual, and performing artists and thinkers from around the world. The city of Tetouan, in northern Morocco, with its strong grass-roots art scene and the prestigious National Institute of Fine Art has been the starting place for the majority of Morocco’s artists.
Green Olive Arts is a new art residency and collaborative art space that is bringing together these two communities by making this city and country accessible to international artists, and by giving Moroccan artists access to the artists of the world. Green Olive Arts is located in the urban heart of Tetouan in a 200m² multi-room flat with views to both the old city (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and the nearby mountains.
At the core of Green Olive Arts is an International Art Residency program for writers and artists of all disciplines. The residency program provides a space for artists to travel away from their normal settings to do research and produce new works in a context offering an abundance of fresh inspiration. Green Olive Arts offers fully equipped production spaces and opportunities for interaction and collaboration with other local and international artists, and promises to be an exciting hub of creativity. The large size of GOA’s facilities also allows them to accommodate art-making tours and other arts-educational and study-abroad groups.
Green Olive Arts was started by artists for artists, representing the culmination of the dreams of two American artists, Jeff McRobbie and Rachel Pearsey. Both Jeff and Rachel have spent several years creating art in Morocco and dreaming of how they could create a collaborative art space, where foreign and local artists could experience the richness of creating art alongside each other in a multicultural environment. In 2010 Rachel connected with Jeff and his wife Nina in Morocco. They discovered they shared the same vision and began working together to create what is today Green Olive Arts.
GOA’s founders are excited to welcome both international and Moroccan artists to Tetouan. As founding artist Rachel Pearsey expressed, “the people, culture, and setting of Morocco have profoundly impacted our work. That is why we at Green Olive Arts are thrilled to offer the same opportunity to other global artists, while simultaneously creating an environment where Moroccan artists can be equally impacted by cross-cultural interaction.”
In addition to providing production space for groups and individuals, GOA offers its clients a wide array of concierge type services including arranging housing, tours, gallery connections, and provision of essential art supplies and tools.
Green Olive Arts opened its doors March 1st, 2013, and is now accepting applications for its International Arts Residency program. For more information visit GOA’s website at www.GreenOliveArts.com. A media kit with pictures is available here.
